East India Comedy is a group of Indian stand-up comedians that performs comedy shows, organizes comedy workshops, corporate events and scripts movie and television shows.[1][2] The group claims to be India's busiest comedy company with a record 130 shows across the country in the calendar year 2013.[3][4] East India Comedy maintains a YouTube channel that shows their comedy stints and satires on topics like politics, religion and the Indian film industry.[5][6] Much of their reputation was initiated through their online presence. The group hosts the India’s version of the Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies), the Ghanta Awards.[7][8]

History

East India Comedy was founded by Sorabh Pant in 2012 along with other comedians.[9]

Performers

The group consists of six full-time performers and hires other comedians, cinematographers and editors as freelancers on project basis.[2] The full-time stand up comedians are:

  • Sorabh Pant: Sorabh Pant is one of India's successful comedians, having done over 250 shows in over 17 cities.[10][11] He has been rated amongst India's top 10 stand-up comedians by The Times of India.[12] In a poll by IBN Live in March 2012, he was listed No. 1 in the 30 most interesting Twitter users in India.[13]
  • Sapan Verma: Sapan is one of the founding member of EIC and has done over 300 shows in the last three years.[14]
  • Sahil Shah: Regarded as One of the most promising names on the comedy circuit. Sahil Shah has also appeared in one episode of Channel V's You're fired!.[15][16]
  • Azeem Banatwalla: Azeem is an engineer turned comedian. He is a travel writer and in past has written for The Man and worked with National Geographic Travel.[17][18]
  • Atul Khatri: Atul is an Indian computer engineer and a regular performer at The Canvas Laugh Factory. He was one of the 3 finalists at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2012.[19][20]
  • Kunal Rao: Kunal is a retired chartered accountant. He debuted his comedy from comedy tour Holy Krao in 2012 and has done more than 300 shows since then. He has also written humor columns for Mid-Day, HT Brunch, Hindustan Times and Maxim.[21]
