Eletrobras Cepel, the Electric Power Research Center, was created in 1974 with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro (Ilha do Fundão). It's part of the Eletrobras group of companies and has for 30 years worked on research and development (R&D) related to electric power generation, transmission and distribution. It is considered the greatest research center on electric power of the Southern Hemisphere.[citation needed]

Cepel has 30 laboratories, 20 of them are located in the headquarters in Rio de Janeiro city. The other ten labs are located in Nova Iguaçu (another city of Rio de Janeiro state), where works on high voltage, high current, etc. are developed.
