Elizabeth Moir School is a co-educational, international school, located on two campuses in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The international school, run by British nationals, facilitates children of all nationalities aged between 2-18. Elizabeth Moir School is the only international school in Sri Lanka to be owned and run by British nationals. Elizabeth Moir School has a percentage of 45% Sri Lankan students and welcomes foreign students from more than 74 different countries and every continent, since the school opened. The school currently has a 6:1 student staff ratio.

History

Elizabeth Moir moved to Sri Lanka in 1983 with her husband and three children. With her experience of working in other international schools in Hong Kong, Elizabeth Moir decided to open an international school in Colombo. By 1995, Elizabeth Moir had established, and been Principal of, two international schools - Colombo International School and The British School in Colombo

In 1996, Elizabeth Moir opened another international school, Elizabeth Moir School, where she is currently the Principal. The Junior School is situated on Park Road and the Senior School on Thalakotuwa Gardens, both sections in Colombo 5.

Students and staff

Approximately 45% of students are from Sri Lanka. The rest come from over 74 countries, many of whom have studied at international schools throughout the world.

The student/staff ratio is approximately 6:1. The staff attend regular seminars to help their professional development. Many of the teachers have degrees from universities throughout the world, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Curriculum

The Ridge

Elizabeth Moir School follows the British education system (Edexcel). Students sit for IGCSE and Advanced Level examinations in the Senior School. Since the school’s inception, students have been awarded places at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Berkeley and other top universities around the globe.

Junior School

Junior School consists of 9 grades, Early Learners, pre KG, KG1, KG2, Junior 1-5. Formal teaching of numbers and letters begins in Early Learners with kids aged 2 1/2 years. The Junior School uses the latest British text books for every subject. Literacy and Numeracy are the main focus of the curriculum throughout the junior school, while IT, Science, Art, Music & Movement, Drama, Physical Education & Swimming being the other subjects.

Senior School

Senior School follows British Edexcel Sylubuses that are adapted to the school's Sri Lankan context. It consists of 7 grades, Form 1-5, Lower 6 Form, Upper 6th Form. In Form 4, students begin the IGCSE course. The course lasts two years with students taking the examination at the end of Form 5. For IGCSE, English Language, Mathematics (as compulsory subjects), Further Pure Mathematics, English Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Human Biology, History, Geography, ICT, French, Sinhala, Tamil, Art subjects are available. In the Lower 6th students begin the Advanced Level course which lasts two years and they take the examinations at the end of the Upper 6th. Subjects taught are Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, English Literature, Geography, Economics.

Sports

The international school offers a variety of sporting activities for its students, including: Basketball, Football,Cricket, Athletics, Swimming, Netball and Indoor games. Indoor games include Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, etc. Elizabeth Moir School regularly competes with other international schools in these sports and often hosts its own tournaments in Colombo.

The Performing Arts

From an early age, students are encouraged to participate in the performing arts. Both schools stage productions each year and The Crucible, Annie, A Few Good Men, Oliver and Footloose have been acclaimed in the Colombo newspapers.[1][2][3][4][5]
