Template:Chinese name Fangge Dupan (9 March 1927 – 10 March 2016)[1] was a Taiwanese Hakka poet. Born in a prestigious Hakka family in Xinpu, Hsinchu, she joined a strong local consciousness Li Poetry society~(Chinese 笠詩社),actively devoted in Hakka poetry in 80s. Served as President of "Taiwan Liteaiture" Magazine and Female Whales Poets Society in 90s;her poetry 遠千湖 written in Menderin, English and Japanese in 1992 was awarded for 1st Chen Xiu Xi poem prize. In 2007, FangGe DuPan won the " outstanding contribution award and New Taiwan Literature contribution award from Council for Hakka Affairs. In 2008, she was awarded Taian writer oxford prize from Aletheia University.

Her main works are Ghost Festival (中元節), PinAn Drama (平安戲), Paper man (紙人), Vegetable Garden (菜園).

Her life

PangGe Dupan's family was a prestigous family in Xinpu, Hsinchu. Her grandfather, ChengJian Pan, was chief in the village during the Japanese colonial period. Her father, JinHuai Pan, was a first child during the time of studying his bachelor of law in Tokyo, acquired many new concepts. Her mother Wanmei Zhan, from Kansai, Hsinchu, was a child bride before she adopted by Dr. Zhan, after adopted, she was able to study to 3rd girl high Taipei then. The background of family influenced PangGe Dupan greatly and deeply.[2]

PangGe DuPan was born in XinPu HsinChu in 9 March 1927. She had 3 younger sisters and 3 younger brothers, she went Japanese with her father soon after she was born and came back to Taiwan at age of 6 to 7 in 1934. Because her background, she was able to enter the "elite primary school" , normally for Japanese, for aristorcratic education; However, she also gained great experience of bully by Japanese school mates. Even by the time she went to National HsinChu Girls Senior High School (hgsh) in 1940, the situation of been bullied still existed. To reconcile the pain of colonial while get along with Japanese classmates, she started literary creation in Japanese, including poems, novels and prose.[2][3]: 69 

After graduation from hgsh, FangGe Dupan enrolled in Taipei Girls Senior High School. A school for 2 years, the classes including housework like: ikebana, tea ceremony, sewing and knitting..etc., also subjects of literature and history. As a whole, Senior High school's guideline was developing all kinds of women virtue to serve husband and educate children, humble and tolerate daily encounter. This idea inspired FangGe Dupan to ponder the status of women. After World War II, She didn't finish her education and returned to Xinpu to teach in junior high school, soon met her husband, Dr. Qingshou Du, and got married. [2]

In 1947, during the event of 228, Uncle's family of FangGe Dupan's mother, Qilang Zhang and 2 other people, was busted and killed by KMT, it affected FangGe Dupan deeply, she expressed her judging and ironic attitude for politic in her works.[2]

In 1948, FangGe Dupan ignored the opposition from family and decided to marry Dr. Qilang Zhang, they moved to Chungli, Taoyuan after married. FangGe assisted her husband's clinic chore, also writing articles as a freelancer, performing mentor for floral teacher.[2]

In 1965, FangGe Dupan joint Li Poetry society, after staying in U.S.A. for couple years, she came backt to Taiwan and lived in Chungli, devoted in Hakka poem. In 90s, she served in "Taiwan Liteaiture" Magazine and Female Whales Poets Society as president. 17 Sep. 1967, Dr. Qingshou Du was badly injured in a car accident, in a crucial condition, but recovered fortunately at the end. FangGe Dupan reckoned praying works greatly, and started preaching afterwards. In May,1982 FangGe Dupan became an Amearican citizen. [3]: 69 [4] In 1992, her poetry 遠千湖 written in Menderin, English and Japanese was awarded for 1st Chen Xiu Xi poem prize.[2]

On March 10, 2016, FangGe Dupan died of illness at home at the age of 90.

Works

The motivation of FangGe Dupan's work was writing diary by poem, to release her deep frustrations. Therefore, she encountered "language barrier generation" gap, but she didn't stop her work.

  • 因此,雖然她也有「跨越語言一代」作家的困擾:早期接受日本教育,習慣以日語思考、創作,戰後重新學習北京話時相當困難,但她並沒有因此而停止創作[5]: 18–19 
  • 杜潘芳格認為,詩是詩人對於大自然法則和現實問題時,以自己的立場發揮廣大深厚的感受或知識,以言語做為資材構築而成 所以她的詩風不強調形式技巧,而是內心思想與感受 她的詩中關於外在景物的描寫,正好巧妙地傳遞詩人內心的想像 在語言上,二次大戰前後不同政治體制,使她習得日文與中文,再加上她的母語客語,多種語言使她必須不斷地克服語言上的困境[5]: 22-23
