Summary
Description0111921 Kuti group of Hindu temples and Vaishnava monastery, Thubon Madhya Pradesh 044.jpg |
English: The Kuti group is the largest surviving monument in Thubon village of north Madhya Pradesh. It is notable for its Vishnu-tradition Hindu monastery, six dedicated yoga meditation cells, five Vishnu temples, two Shiva temples, a congregational-style worship space, a monastery water management system, and a host of Hindu artwork.
The entire complex was built from large stone blocks and stone slabs. The monastery consists of long pillared corridors with rooms, with temples at the ends – this structure is not called Baradari by the villagers and sometimes used for group meetings. Another area has six cells, each with only enough space for one person to enter, sit and meditate. The temples are in mandapika-style, a few show parts of torn sikhara. The artwork near sanctum doorway and outside walls include various avatars of Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti (goddesses like Durga and Chamunda), Surya, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Vedic deities, Navgraha, Ganga, Yamuna, dancers, musicians, amorous couples (mithuna), and others. The entire complex has its own step well, and is on the banks of river Lilavati (Lilut), a tributary of Aur (Orr) river. This complex is from the 10th-century, with some additions in the 11th-century. |
