Description Tarakan Island. 1945-06-28. Tarakan airstrip was repaired against almost hopeless odds by members of 1 and 8 Airfield Construction Squadrons, RAAF and AIF units. It was opened to fighter aircraft for the first time on 28 June. Shown, a Beaufighter of 31 Squadron, RAAF, landing on the airstrip.
