Summary

Description Certificate Confirming Payment of Protection Money for a Jewish Resident (1833). The system of “protected Jews” dated from early modern times and allowed some Jews to obtain better legal status in return for paying protection money [Schutzgeld]. Above all, authorities used this system to prevent poorer Jews from settling in their territory. Although the French Revolution brought Jewish emancipation to Germany, the payment of protection money in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1833, as evidenced here, shows that even after 1815 the old legal discrimination continued or was reinstated; the Revolution of 1848-49 would not lead to definitive equality either.
