Summary

Description

1911 Pope-Hartford 50 HP Model W Portola Roadster
Pope Manufacturing Company was founded by Albert Augustus Pope around 1876 in Boston, Massachusetts. Pope manufactured bicycles, motorcycles, and automobiles. Between the years 1903 and 1915, the company operated a number of automobile companies including Pope-Hartford (1903-1914), Pope-Robinson, Pope-Toledo (1903-1909), Pope-Tribune (1904-1907) and Pope-Waverley. The longest running, the Pope-Hartford, located in Hartford, Connecticut was a well-regarded luxury car with a reputation built on endurance racing. To celebrate the Pope-Hartford car that won the Portola Road Races in 1909 and 1911, Pope-Hartford introduced the 'Portola Roadster' built with minimal bodywork. They also branded their race-type engine as the Portola Motor and offered it in their sportier production cars. This engine was the same configuration as the standard 50hp 389 cubic-inch, 4-cylinder motor but the Portola motor incorporated all of the company's racing technology for ultimate performance. Engine; 450 cu in 4 cyl
