Summary

Description
English: Here, signallers of the British 2nd Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment train in the desert at Helwan, Egypt (a southern suburb of Cairo) on June 17, 1940 in World War II. This widely published British Government photo is part of a set taken that day of the 2nd Battalion training . I personally scanned this image from a press release photo in my collection, date-stamped 8-7-1940. According to the British Imperial War Museum (https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205541932 ) this image was taken by the No. 1 Army Film and Photo Section, Army Film and Photographic Unit, is marked "released", and is part of their "War Office Second World War Official Collection", so it is an official British government photograph. A wider shot of the heliograph is at the IWM here: (https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205541931). These and many other photos from this session may be viewed at the website of the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum, Lancaster, here (http://www.kingsownmuseum.com/ko2328.htm ) This photo appeared on page 13 of the 14 Dec. 1940 London Illustrated News (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/bradford_timeline/50778590618/ ). It also appears on the top of page 34 in the 1986 book "Early Signalling Equipment, The Heliograph, A Short History", by Alan Harfield, published by the Royal Signals Museum. (Note that the caption there is erroneously swapped with that on page 33).
