Summary

Description

Polyporus gayanus Lév.

Image location: Grand Circuit, Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Magallanes, Chile

Very common in lenga forests throughout Patagonia. This is the first fresh specimen I saw, though. It is tough but flexible and somewhat rubbery-soft. The cap is dry. It always grows on limbs no more than 1-2" thick. The pores are somewhat dense, around 1-2 per mm; they start out creamy-whitish like this then turn reddish-brown to almost black as they age. The flesh is sort of buff-tan. It is strictly lateral, without stipe.
