Summary

Description
English:

This vocabulary appears to be the earliest known substantial record of any Brazilian language. The manuscript volume, full details of which are contained in our previous paper, was compiled during the 1540s by a French sea-captain or voyage-organizer, probably of Bordeaux or Rouen, who may also have been the collector of some of the items, including the vocabularies. It is possible that the two vocabularies were collected in the course of one Atlantic voyage, but it has not proved possible to identify a particular voyage, or to learn more about the possible compiler than his name (Jehan Lamy), partly because the period of the 1540s was one of intense trading activity between the French Atlantic ports on the one hand and the coasts of Guinea and Brazil on the other.

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or fewer.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
