Description7 La statue de Narasimha Hampi Vijayanagar Karnataka India April 2014.jpg |
Narasimha statue at Hampi Karnataka Narasiṁha is considered one of many avatars of Vishnu. He is often visualised as half-man/half-lion, having a human-like torso and lower body, with a lion-like face and claws. This image is revered by a significant number of Vaiṣṇava school of Hinduism. He is known primarily as the 'Great Protector'. Narasimha is an important deity in the story linked to Holika and the destruction of symbolic evil king Hiraṇyakaśipu - who attempted to control and prevent people from independent thought and open debate - in Hindu mythology. Holika burning precedes the festival of Holi (the Hindu spring festival of colors). The Narasimha statue was one of many Hindu deity symbols that were destroyed by Islamic army attacking the Hindu Vijayanagar Empire in 16th century.
