Description

A Hebridean tombstone sometimes attributed to Aonghus Óg Mac Domhnaill, Lord of Islay. Analysis of the stone, which is inscribed "Here lies the body of Angusius, son of Lord Angusius MacDonald of Islay", has determined that it must be that of a later individual (source: R.A. McDonald, The Kingdom of the Isles, 1997, page 187.)

Source

McKean Historical Notes, by Fred G. McKean, published in 1906, in Washington, D.C., USA. The illustration appears on page 33. The caption reads: "Tombstone of Angus Og of Isla. Lord of the Isles, ob. 1330. Inscription. Hic jacet corpus Angusii filii Domini Angusii Mac Domhnill de Ila".

Note that this particular image and caption appear earlier in: The Clan Donald, volume 1, by Angus MacDonald and Archibald MacDonald, published 1896 in Scotland, in the plate between pages 102 and 103. [1]

Date

This image was originally created no later than 1896 (the year of the publication of The Clan Donald).

Author
