Summary
DescriptionAhmed Ismail (Duqsi).jpg |
English: Mr. Dugsi was a great nationalist, freedom fighter, well educated and one of the cultural intellectuals in Somali land. He was born in a seedy suburb of Burao, the son of a brilliant, feckfulness, Somali man. His tall, aristocratic good looks came from his father. He was sent to Aden to attend a public school called St.Antonio in Aden of Yemen. When he finished his studies, he began to study blue books and write freelance articles about the British colonization in Somaliland and whole of Africa. His first views on imperialism were conventional.
At that period, Dugsi took a brisk line with the old-style humanitarians like Farah Omar, Ali Garad, Egal, Sultan Derie, Mohamood Ali shire, Abdullah Esse, Mohamood Ahmed Ali, Yussuf Haji Adan, Abdilahi Esse, and Abdi Saeed Hussien etc who were denouncing the ill treatment of natives in Somaliland.
“We are not enough people now to do what you want of us, our country has not many people in it and the people are dying fast. The British man looked on. There must be a way, there must be many in Somali’s country.
Socially, we are not faring any better from British Empire’s ineptitude. Through their wicked tactics, mistrust, apathy and fatalism have found home in our hearts. The tremendous suffering we have experience is beyond measure or comprehension”. One of his speeches in 1958 in Aden of Yemen. He believed that the change is mental rather than material. Mr.Gugsi cared no longer for the growth or improvement of his country but gave himself up to ethical questions and endeavoured day by day to bind himself more closely to the people. Duqsi was as controversial historical figure as all men of substance were during their times. This converse would be partly contributed to his strong defined conviction and self-belief rare in many of our compatriots today. All great men usually possess some form of intuitive in this regard. He was a true patriot who loved his country and had the intelligence and the courage to manage any strategic relationship for the benefit of his country.
For many years, he had drifted around Middle East, hobbling along with political enthusiast of various shades and many times, he demanded “complete an absolute independence for Somaliland”. He was the most mixable, unassuming and self-deep taxation man ever seen in Somalia. Growing ever bolder, Dugsi denounced the British plan for constitutional reform as “bogus” and ”fraudulent” and announced the start of a campaign of positive action.
Dugsi was one of the small elite, government civil servants, to play an active roll and had plenty of time for politics though he met many difficulties in his political life. No one but a great man could have administered such a state without stagnation or confusion but Duqsi was a great man.
He possessed the supreme quality of genius-in exhaustible energy. He never gave up and was famous for his upright personality, honesty and strong character. After independence, he became minister of planning in Somalia. For his long struggle of freedom for his people, he is deserved to be remembered and honoured. Dugsi was exceptionally gifted and his unusually keen memory and hard work meant that he often produced pioneering ideas-Though a great scholar of his days, it is now for his tremendous ideas that he is best remembered, fascinated by the supernatural. He was an admirer of the history of Somalia. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace? Amen Yaa Rabi |
