Deutsch: Römische Arena von Arles, Frankreich. Amphitheater, um 90 n. Chr. erbaut; Durchmesser 140 m x 103 m, ursprünglich aus drei Geschossen mit je 60 Arkaden bestehend und ca. 25.000 Zuschauern Platz bietend; im Mittelalter zu Festung ausgebaut, von der noch drei Vierecktürme (12. Jahrhundert) und die Arkadenvermauerung zeugen; 1830 Entfernung einer der drei Arkadenreihen; seit 1846 restauriert und gegenwärtig an Festtagen Schauplatz für Stierkämpfe; der hier gefundene 15 m hohe Granit-Obelisk steht seit 1676 an der Place de la République. |
