English: This diagram depicts the notion of ventilation. It demonstrates the concept of air passing through the passages and what occurs to the body as a result. When the volume of air increases, the pressure decreases, allowing outside air to rush in. The chest and thoracic cavity expand, while the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles constrict. During expiration, the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax, allowing air to exit the body, while the thoracic cavity and chest tighten.
