Summary[edit]
Description | Picture of Martin Wong's painting and wood carving work Attorney Street (Handball Court with Autobiographical Poem by Piñero) (1982-1984) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in 2022. A dense oil painting of a handball court in New York's Lower East Side. The wall of the court has been extensively tagged by graffiti artists. A poem by the artist's roommate and friend Miguel Piñero is painted in the sky above the building behind the court. The frame of the painting contains a cartouche on the bottom with the phrase "It's the real deal Neal / I'm going to rock your world / Make your planets wirl [sic] / Ain't no wack [sic] attack." That same phrase is rendered in the painting at the bottom of the court, in the form of hands painted in the manual sign language alphabet. At the top of the frame, the artist carved and painted his name and the title of work, also rendered in hands representing sign language. |
