Summary

Description
English: Balvenie Castle This is the massive east front of the castle which dates from the 13th century. Originally a Comyn stronghold it is well sited commanding the passes to Huntly, Keith & Cullen. Later it was owned by the Douglas family & on their downfall the king granted it to the Earl of Atholl. One curious condition was they had to provide the king with one red rose on St John the Baptists day. A century later the rent was increased to two roses! Mary Queen of Scots slept here as did Montrose in 1644.The adjacent distillery produce a 'Balvenie' malt whisky.
