English: "He was born in 1801 on the Putnam Plantation near Savannah, Georgia. He attended Harvard and studied law privately at Saint Augustine and practiced there. In the Seminole War, 1835-42, he served as major, colonel and adjutant general. He served in both houses of the Florida legislature and as Speaker of the House in 1848. By appointment of President Zachary Taylor, he was Surveyor-General of Florida from May 1848 to 1854. He also was the President of the Florida Historical Society from 1853-56. Putnam County is named for him. He died on January 25, 1869."
