English: Looking south from the north (rear) end of the Jamaica-bound (eastbound) platform the Briarwood (Briarwood–Van Wyck) subway station in Briarwood, Queens. Note that the support beams in the center of the tracks transition from narrow and frequent to thick and widely-spaced farther south along the platform. This may be to support either the Van Wyck Expressway or Queens Boulevard crossing over the station, although it is hard to know for sure (without further research).
The Van Wyck Boulevard subway station was opened in 1937, while the Van Wyck Expressway was constructed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It is possible that the wider pillars were added to underpin the station at this time, although this is just conjecture. The narrow pillars are definitely original, as they have the remnants of original IND signage.
