These photos were taken along the Goongerah Old Growth Forest Walk [1] between Legges Road and the creek to its east[2].
The walk continues from the creek to Errinurndra Road. However, no photos in this set are from that section, which has now been cleared.
The area is also known as "Coupe 840-502-0020" and has been logged and reduced to smouldering ashes, destroying one half of the walking track despite the Victorian Labor Government's 2006 promise that "...a Labor Government will immediately protect remaining significant stands of old-growth forest currently available for timber harvesting...". The Labour government also made an election promise to "Invest $1.3 million to create ... the Great Short Walks of East Gippsland", which was to include the "Old Growth Walk - Goongerah". Goongerah is the nearest settlement to Brown Mountain.
The clearing of the 600+ year old trees and destruction of old growth forest gave employment to a group of only five people for just four weeks.
↑Also known as: Valley of the Giants (by Environment East Gippsland), "The Walk" (by VicForests), Land of the Leviathans, or less formally as "The Brown Mountain big old giant trees walk".
↑Brown Mountain Creek (possibly also known as Sassafras Creek Gully)
