English: The Burgoyne Monument in St Andrew's Church South Tawton. This slate and stone tablet on the south wall of the South Chapel is dated 1651 and is in memory of Robert Burgoyne (baptised 1595, d. post 1651), 5th son of Robert Burgoine (d.1628) of Braunton, Devon, younger son and eventual heir of George Burgoine of South Tawton (lord of the manor of South Zeal in the parish of South Tawton). Also (even primarily) to his wife Margaret Whiddon (baptised 1609, died in or before 1651 as indicated by skull under her engraved effigy), a daughter of Oliver Whiddon (1584-1619) of Sidbury, Devon, a junior branch of the Whiddon family, lords of the manor of Chagford, Devon. The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p. 118, pedigree of "Burgoyne of South Tawton" & p.782 pedigree of "Whiddon of Chagford"). Those who are commemorated include a child in a cradle and an infant in a shroud. To the left of a prie-dieu kneel 6 men, identified by initials (Vivian, p.118):
- RB, Robert Burgoyne, kneeling opposite his wife, whom he married in 1628/9. He is also shown above the engraved slate tablet as a kneeling figure sculpted in white stone. Below him:
- O, for son Oliver Burgoyne (buried 1631 at ST), thus his father's first-born son, shown lying under his father as a baby in a shroud tied at head and foot with face peeping out, with skull under.
On the slate tablet behind their father kneel successively:
- G, for George Burgoyne (1632-1684), eldest surviving son and heir apparent
- P, for Philip Burgoyne (1635-1683)
- F, for Francis Burgoyne (baptised 1641) (given as a daughter "Frances" in Vivian, p.118)
- W, for W. Burgoyne, died pre-1651, skull under his effigy
- W, for William Burgoyne (baptised 1639 at ST)
Only sons Robert and Philip are shown with progeny in Vivian's pedigree. To the right are two women kneeling and one infant:
- MB, for Margaret Burgoyne, nee Whiddon, kneeling opposite her husband, with skull under. She is also shown above the engraved slate tablet as a kneeling figure sculpted in white stone, again kneeling opposite her husband separated by a prie-dieu. Behind her on the slate tablet:
- M, for Margaret Burgoyne, (baptised 1637 at South Tawton), daughter, with skull under
- E, for daughter E.Burgoyne, shown as an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes in a wickerwork cradle with canopy, with skull under
The arms of Burgoyne are: Azure, a talbot argent (As shown on the monument to Thomas Chafe (d.1648) in the church at St Giles in the Wood, Devon, who married a Burgoyne.
