Summary

Description Aaron Curtis (right), who leads the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Burning Man Compliance team, gives that morning’s compliance teams their daily assignments. Curtis, who is from the Utah State Office of the BLM, has 7 compliance teams, made up of one BLM and one participant volunteer, to inspect nearly 68,000 burners and vendors to ensure compliance with both environmental concerns and vendor compliance. Curtis likens his teams work as, "being Park Rangers in the craziest campground in the world." The compliance teams deal with issues surrounding environmental concerns, such as grey water, black water, and oil or gas spills on the playa to ensuring that vendors have the proper permits to be conducting business at the event. Curtis deploys his teams with a “divide and conquer” philosophy. This is the first year that members of the Burning Man community have actively integrated with the BLM compliance teams. Each team member has been provided side-by-side training with one another in preparation for their monitoring duties.
