William McAlpine’s former London and North Eastern Railway rebuilt Gresley 4-6-2 ‘A3’ class locomotive number 4472 FLYING SCOTSMAN passes Burscough Bridge Junction signal box 13 signal (Up Main Distant) with a special from Southport. Sunday 3rd November 1985
Burscough Bridge Junction signal box is a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Standard design which was opened in 1922 by the London and North Western Railway fitted with a 40 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame (on a girder for a 48 lever frame), replacing an earlier box. The frame was reduced to 26 levers, possibly in the mid-1980s after the closure of the siding to Burscough Junction Ministry of Defence. 101 signal, an automatic signal located on the up line approaching Dean Lane level crossing was installed in the mid-1970s, the box having an emergency replacement switch for the signal. The frame and emergency replacement switch were replaced by a switch panel on 6th June 1993
