English: House of a sengaji, a local ruler in Galela
Nederlands: Negatief. Vergeleken met de miniatuur eilandjes Ternate en Tidore is Halmahera een enorm eiland. Het is veel minder bekend geworden dan de twee andere eilandjes, die allebei een tijd lang de kern waren van veel grotere sultanaten. In de 16e eeuw was er ook op Noord-Halmahera een sultanaat geweest, namelijk Djailolo, dat toen machtiger was dan de andere sultanaten in de regio. Later viel het eiland deels onder Ternate, deels onder Tidore. In de 19e en 20e eeuw woonde de bevolking vooral aan de kust, met name op het noordelijk schiereiland, terwijl het bergachtige en zwaar beboste binnenland grotendeels onbewoond was. (P.
