| Description |
Nederlands: Repronegatief. In de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw werden transporten tussen Europa en Indië en tussen de delen van de Archipel onderling in toenemende mate door (meestal) in Europa gebouwde stoomschepen overgenomen. Hierbij speelde de Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) een grote rol. Deze Maatschappij begon haar lijndiensten in 1891. Het duurde echter enige tijd voor Makassar het centrum werd van de KPM-lijnen in de zogeheten Grote Oost (het oostelijk deel van Indië), een rol die in feite een tijd lang door Singapore gespeeld was. De overheid in de Archipel moest een net van vuurtorens aanleggen om het steeds drukker wordende scheepsverkeer in goede banen te leiden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
