DescriptionCaerphilly station geograph-3831208-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg
English: Caerphilly station, 1990.
View westward, towards Ystrad Mynach and Rhymney: ex-GWR (ex-Rhymney Railway) Cardiff Queen Street - Rhymney line, formerly with branch to Senghenydd (closed to passengers 6/64): also ex-Brecon & Merthyr Railway Newport - Machen - Dowlais (Top) - Pontsticill Junction - Brecon line (closed to passengers 31/12/62), with a branch to Pontypridd (closed to passengers 7/56). Thus the station had been much busier in Steam Days - also with the vast coal traffic until the virtual end of the mines after the mid-19080s: it was at its nadir here in 1990 and has been restored more recently, with an extra bay platform for Cardiff-bound trains, for the greatly enhanced Rhymney service - soon to be electrified.
