English: An extremely rare (one of three known) original belt-plate of the 79th Cameron Highlanders from the year of their formation (1793). Due to a War Dept. clerical error they were erroneously designated as the "Cameronian" Volunteers, a mistake later perpetuated when they were re-named the "Cameronian Highlanders". This was not corrected until 1804 after repeated petitions from both the Cameron regiment and the original Cameronian regiment, originally founded in 1689 by James Douglas, the Earl of Angus, as a Covenanter guard unit, later becoming the 26th Regt. of Foot, and then the Scottish Rifles.
