Summary
DescriptionCarolus borromeus 01.jpg |
English: The Church of Carolus Borromeus (Carolus Borromeuskerk) at the Hendrik Conscienceplein in Antwerp, is a former Jesuit Church in baroque style.
The church was designed by fathers Franciscus de Aguilon s.j. and Pieter Huyssens s.j. The church was bult between 1615 and 1521. First dedicated to Ignatius de Loyola, then in 1773, after the suppression of the Jesuit Order, renamed to the church of Charles Borromeo. Since 1803 it has been a parish church. The church is a typical product of the Counter-Reformation in which the Catholic Church tried to regain the confidence of the people with much pomp. The Jesuits were the spearhead of this movement. The facade of the church is inspired by Serlio's books on Architecture. The Church boasted numerous paintings and ceiling paintings by Rubens which were unfortunately destroyued during a fire in 1718. After the fire the church was given a more sober interior.
