Description

In this stained glass window, Józef Mehoffer depicts the Adoration of the Magi under the vault of a starry sky. The three kings fall on their knees before Our Lady and the Child Jesus. Above them shines the Star of Bethlehem. An angel with wide open wings holds the banner. On it is written: "Gloria in excelsis Deo". Below the main scene, Herod looks at Death, who bites him on the shoulder. On the floor lie the newborns killed in the Bethlehem infanticide. Satan sits on the right accompanied by a snake.

Elements of folk art characterise the painting. It is rich in stylistic and formal contrasts. It is reminiscent of folk nativity scenes and traditional Christmas performances as they were in Poland. The Art Nouveau style is evident in some details of the decoration, such as the flowers that form a frieze above Herod and Satan. It is also expressed in the pastel shades, while the strong colours are more in keeping with popular culture. The depiction of Herod is highly original, for this evil king and the death that accompanies him appear here as Satan's guests, so to speak.
