Son existence est mentionnée dès 1703 mais le nouvel ameublement fut confié par l'impératrice Joséphine à Charles Percier et Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine qui vont l'agrandir en y ajoutant la partie semi-circulaire au sol recouvert d'un somptueux dallage de marbre noir et blanc.
