Summary

Description
English: Map showing key locations of the Coal Creek War in the Coal Creek area of western Anderson County, Tennessee.
  • The Coal Creek War was a coal miners' uprising in the early 1890s. Most of the events took place in the vicinity of Coal Creek (modern Lake City) and Briceville.
  • "Thistle Switch" — where Tennessee governor John P. Buchanan debated with labor organizer Eugene Merrill — was located at a point where Thistle Hollow joins the Coal Creek Valley (before the Great Depression, a separate set of tracks connected the main railroad tracks with the Thistle Mine further up the hollow).
  • Drummond's Trestle still stands where the main tracks cross Coal Creek (coord. 36.18822, -84.18304). Fort Anderson was located atop "Militia Hill" (the hill still appears on USGS topographical maps), which was a ridge flanking eastward off Vowell Mountain.

  • Note: Map NOT drawn to scale, but based loosely on USGS topographical map.
