Summary[edit]
Created by me, using excel.
Data is an odds ratio. (Number of DO residents in ACGME programs / US-educated MD residents in ACGME programs) / (Number of DO graduates / US-educated graduates) (PGY 1 residents only)
This number is an indicator of the relative acceptance of DO-graduates into allopathic (ACGME) residency training, in different years. The result shows the actual rate of acceptance of DOs into ACGME programs adjusted for changes in the absolute number of DO-graduates and the numbers of DO graduates relative to US-MD graduates. Any increase in the ratio of DO/MD residents in ACGME programs, due either to an absolute increase in the number of DO graduates or to an increase in the number of DO-graduates relative to MD-graduates, is factored out.
Theoretically, a result of 100 would signify that DO-graduates are accepted to ACGME programs at the same rate as US-MD programs (DO parity), assuming 100% of DO and MD graduates applied to ACGME programs each year. This is not actually the case, primarily because a significant percentage of DO-graduates each year do not apply to ACGME programs, and instead opt to train in exclusively AOA-approved programs (excluding dual-accredited programs.) This figure is not adjusted for changes in that factor over time.
Assuming p < 0.05, trend line is significant until 2007.
Data comes from several studies. JAMA. Author: Brotherton. PMID 10974692 & PMID 12953003 AACOM: "Annual Statistical report on Osteopathic Med" 2006.
