Summary

Description
English: Deadwood Draw on the NRHP since November 12, 1992. West - Northwest of Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska. Unusual NRHP site in that there are no historic structures, although there are supposedly wagon ruts. The old wind mill and water tank are 20th century "intrusions". Land privately owned and fenced off, but if you want a closer look, just watch out for the barbed wire and rattlesnakes! The "draw" is just a (usually) dry stream bed in front of the windmill. It's historical significance is that when nearby Sidney was the end of the railroad line (Rock Island?) in the 1870s, Deadwood (now in South Dakota) became a gold rush town and Sidney, NE was the nearest railroad shipping point. Local brochure says "millions of pounds" (as in thousands of tons) of material was shipped from Sidney to Deadwood daily. The only "road" was up this draw. I don't know whether this "Deadwood Draw" continues on to become the more famous "Deadwood Gulch" near the actual Deadwood, SD, which is 273 miles away by modern roads according to Google Maps (through Alliance, NE and Rapid City, SD). Depth of the photo must be 300-400 yards. Local resident tells me the wagon ruts are about a 100 yards past (east of) the windmill. But I don't trespass where there are rattlesnakes!
