Description Illustration of a differential gear, made by Wapcaplet in Blender and finished in the en:GIMP.

If the left side gear (red) encounters resistance, the pinion gear (green) rotates about the left side gear, in turn applying extra rotation to the right side gear (yellow).

This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: Doubled the length of rightmost arrow to indicate the doubling of the rotational speed of the yellow right side gear. Used GIMP for the edit..
