Summary

Description
English: Dr. Asaph Leavitt Bissell (1797–1850), born in Hanover, New Hampshire, was an early student of Dr. Nathan Smith at Darmouth College, where Bissell attended Smith's medical lectures. Subsequently, Bissell followed Smith to Yale College, where Dr. Smith was the founding Dean of the medical faculty at the newly-established Yale Medical School. Bissell graduated from the Medical School in 1815, and practiced medicine for the rest of his life in Suffield, Connecticut, where his parents were born. Dr. Bissell's saddlebags, which he used for carrying medicine on house calls, are in the collection of the Yale Medical School's Historical Library.
