The Lower Precincts gun battery and magazine was originally built for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) by the French Pondicherry (Mercenary) Regiment in 1782. However, following the first British occupation (1795) the upper precincts (as shown in this picture) were constructed and the lower battery significantly improved.
