Summary
| Description |
English: The photogenic Edgartown Harbor Light on Martha's Vineyard, along with the island's Gay Head Light and East Chop Light, were saved from being torn down in the 1980s when Vineyard Environmental Research, Inst. (VERI) founder, William Waterway Marks, successfully petitioned presented testimony to the United States Congress and US Coast Guard. As a result, the control of these three Martha's Vineyard lighthouses was transferred via USCG license to VERI. This was the first time in United States history that a civilian organization was transferred control of "active" lighthouses. |
