Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Edmond Jean de Pury, by Alfred Lenglet; detail from the group portrait "Quarante trois portraits de peintres de l'atelier de Gleyre, vers 1856-1868," oil on canvas, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, Petit Palais.

The portrait of de Pury is identified in the book Une famille de républicain fouriéristes: les Milliet, Volume 1, by Paul Milliet, Paris: M. Giard & E. Brière, 1915, p. 251:

("It is Paul Baudouin who keeps two very curious canvases, on which the students of the Gleyre workshop have brought together their portraits. The fragment that he very kindly allowed me to reproduce here [p. 253] shows the athletic torso of our massier, de Pury. Alfred Lenglet's painting is solid and luminous, but to render completely the elegant vigor of the model, it would have required the chisel of a Greek sculptor.").

A massier, in a painting studio, was the student responsible for collecting contributions, providing for common expenses, and assisting the master.
