Description
English: Photograph of United States librarian Ellen M. Coe. She was librarian for the New York Free Circulating Library (later absorbed by the New York Public Library) from 1881-1895. She succeeded Mary J. Stubbs and her sister who were, in sequence, the first two librarians (March 1, 1880 - late 1881). She resigned to marry Joseph Hines Rylance, and was succeeded by Arthur Elmore Bostwick. Five branches to the original building were added during her service, and circulation increased from 69,000 to 650,000.
