Summary
| Description |
English: Entrance to Preston Park The biggest park in Brighton. The plinth marks the former boundary of the manors of Preston to the north and Radinden to the south which came to incorporate much of Brighton and Hove. Once meadowland attached to Preston Manor it was opened as a private park in the early 1870s and was offered to Brighton Corporation in 1876 who could not afford to buy it. They eventually did in 1883 with help from a local bookmaker and was opened to the public in 1884. The park has long been a venue for outdoor shows including circuses, concerts and drills with the exception of the war years when it turned into a vast allotment. |
