Summary

Description Romanian electoral cartoon entitled "The trustees of the peasant". The figure sitting on a skinny, ragged Romanian peasant is Lascăr Catargiu (Conservative Party), dressed in traditional aristocratic (boyar) clothes. Behind him, a globe with the word "Majority". On the right, Ion Brătianu (Liberal Party) in modern, "German" clothes is dragging Catargiu down, saying: "Get down, so I can climb up!". The implication is that the political fight between the two major parties in late 19th century Romania is without benefit for the Romanian peasant, who remains poor and burdened.
