On October 24, 2013, First United Presbyterian Church (USA), Athens, Tennessee was afforded the designation of 2013 Ten in Tennessee Endangered Properties. To be listed with the likes of Cordell Hull Building (Nashville, Davidson County) and the Delta Queen Riverboat (Chattanooga, Hamilton County) is truly an honor. The listing places the historic church with another local landmark, the Niota Depot (Niota, McMinn County; 2009). The church organized in 1889 by the Rev. Jacob Lincoln (J.L.) Cook was constructed in 1892. "Having celebrated more than 120 birthdays without some help, the building may become an object of history itself," a noteworthy statement included in the proposal for admission to the Ten of Tenn Preservation Trust's list.
