Summary

Description
English: Constructed between 1938 and 1940, this terraced stone block structure, made of locally quarried stone, was erected by the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps as a memorial to philanthropist Laura Spelman Rockefeller, serving as a focal point of Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Designed by Henry Hubbard, the monument features two stone terraces and a large bronze memorial tablet with words that were chosen by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to memorialize his mother. The structure beautified a slope that had been cut when US Highway 23/441 was constructed through the park in the 1930s, and was where President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stood and addressed a crowd that had gathered for the dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1940. Today, the terraces provide views of the Newfound Gap Parking Area and surrounding Little Pigeon River and Oconaluftee River valleys in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
