Description
English: fol. 6v of MS GMN 3227a. Recipes for making gunpowder (pulveres pixidum).
  • for a common (communis) powder, use two parts nitrate, (sal nitri seu petrosi) and one part each of sulfur and lindenwood coal (2:1:1).
  • for a stronger (vehemens vel velox) powder, use the ratio 4:1:1.
  • the third recipe increases the proportion of sulfur, to a ratio 9:5:2 (4.5:2.5:1).

The optimal ratio (according to modern literature) would be 6.4:1.2:1.
