Genie is primarily notable for being a test subject in linguistics, and this testing occurred between October 1971 and December 1977. Genie's non-verbal expressiveness at this time was noted to be unique, and was the subject of significant study by the scientists. For instance, in her dissertation and several of her papers Susan Curtiss discussed Genie's expressiveness, saying it contained a property which words could not adequately describe that inexplicably drew people (including her) to Genie and had a very powerful effect on them. Many of the other scientists who worked with Genie echoed these sentiments as well. In addition, her appearance had a significant impact on the interest of many of the scientists, and is the subject of commentary in several accounts of Genie and her case. Both of these are discussed at length in Russ Rymer's 1993 book, Genie: A Scientific Tragedy, the 1994 NOVA documentary on Genie, and Michael Newton's 2002 book Savage Girls and Wild Boys, among other accounts of Genie. Not only are Genie's current whereabouts undisclosed, making it impossible to get a current picture of her, but a picture of her today would be inadequate as it would not show her during the time she was most notable. |
