George Young Pond was born 22 Jun 1840, the son of Asa and Lucille Lucy Ann (Goulding) Pond. He died 1 Feb 1897 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery. He had six siblings. He did not marry. He served as Deputy Clerk and Clerk of Superior Court in Columbus, Georgia.

According to US Civil War Soldier Records, George enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company A, Georgia 31st Infantry Regiment on 29 Aug 1861 as 5th Sergeant, serving the State of Georgia. He was mustered out on 25 Mar 1862. Sources: Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865
