"Malthouse no 4 is a large and prominent element of Weymouth's prestigious Brewers Quay Conservation Area. It is {a} distinctive and virtually complete example of a Victorian malthouse, and was purpose-designed in 1889 by local architect George Rackstraw Crickmay. His client was John Groves, who supplied malted barley to the Brewing House across the square.

"The Malthouse {became redundant in} the early 1970's, and its rarity was emphasized by its listing Grade ll*, which placed it among the top 6% of the nation's outstanding protected buildings.

".. Malt House 4 is a four-storey brick structure with jack-arched concrete floors, supported on steel beams and columns, and braced by steel tie rods at each floor level.

"The pitched roof {is} comprised of massive soft wood timber trusses supporting a Welsh slate roof. The trusses are lined internally with zinc sheet and once served as grain storage bins. "The new accommodation {consists of} 10 2-bedroom flats and maisonettes of various sizes, and includes new lifts and stairs, which were designed to minimize disruption of the existing structure, and to impose the least possible extra stress on the building. Various surviving items of machinery were to be retained and put on display in the basement entrance area - the displays being arranged by the Weymouth Museum.
