From 11th Century Liao China, this Guanyin statue shows off a pose that became standardized in China from 10th Century on for Guanyin: the Water Moon (Shuiyue Guanyin, 水月觀音). The Water Moon pose, which raises the right knee and rests the right arm on top of the right knee, symbolizes the divinity of Pure Land, Guanyin's personal paradise, which Guanyin puts off going to until s/he is done saving humankind first.
