The action begins after a service to remember those who have died or been injured in conflict. Prince Harry and, on film from the US, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at yesterday evening’s curtain-raiser – which saw pageantry, parades and music – of the ‘Invictus spirit’ of wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women. Today they will show their fighting spirit in the sporting arena. Among them is British Armed Forces Team Captain Dave Henson who is running in the 100m and 200m. He was among the 416 competitors from 13 nations who came together last night on the South Lawn of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP) in front of a crowd of 6,500 and a TV audience tuned-in to BBC’s The One Show Special. Singer Laura Wright and actor Idris Elba were among those to take the stage after a roaring Red Arrows fly-past. Today: ‘Drumhead Service’ – 1pm / Athletics (track and field) – Lee Valley Athletics Centre – 14.00-18.00 Ticket holders are urged to first join competitors for a short ‘Drumhead Service’ at 1pm. Its origins date back to when soldiers would make a pile of drums to provide a makeshift altar on the field of battle. In the centenary year of the start of World War One, it has been chosen as a fitting moment of reflection to remember those who died and were injured in that war and all subsequent conflicts. Today’s service also comes on the anniversary of ‘9/11’. The sporting competition began this morning with the athletics heats. 112 field competitors and 128 track competitors are taking part in today’s competition. From 2pm onwards, there will be final-after-final. On the track will be the 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m along with the 4x100m relay. The field events are Shot Put and Discus. 179 competitors from all 13 nations will have been involved in the crucial qualifying rounds and heats earlier in the day. Teams range from Estonia’s two field athletes to the US contingent who bring 40 competitors in the field and 44 on the track. Henson will lead out the British Armed Forces team hopefuls comprising 10 athletes in the field events and 20 on the track. The men’s 100m finals punctuate the first hour of today’s competition at Lee Valley Athletics Centre. The ambulant IT1, IT2 and IT3 will be followed by the open IT6, wheelchair IT4 and visually impaired IT5 classifications. Meanwhile in the field are the men’s shot and women’s discus finals in the IF1, IF2, IF3 and IF4 classifications. The next hour begins with the women’s 100m finals (ambulant IT3, open IT6 and wheel IT4 classifications). From 15.30 the following hour is dominated by the 1,500m finals; the men go first in the ambulant IT1 and IT3 classifications ahead of the open IT6 and wheel IT4 and culminating in the women’s ambulant IT1 final. From 16.10-17.00, the men’s discus finals take place for the IF1, IF2, IF3 and IF4 classifications together with the finals of the women’s shot in IF1, IF2, IF4 and IF5 classifications. Back on the track, the men’s 200m finals in the ambulant IT1, IT2 and IT3 classifications will have been decided, with the open IT6 and wheel IT4 to follow. The last hour of competition features the 400m finals, with the men’s ambulant IT1, open IT6 and wheel IT4 races followed by the women’s open IT6 and wheel IT4. The day’s action concludes with the 4x100m mixed relay final.
